The two numbers that actually matter
Latency (ping) is the round-trip time between your device and the game server. Under 30ms is excellent for competitive play. 30–60ms is good — most players won't notice. 60–100ms is where latency starts affecting gameplay. Above 100ms, you will feel every shot that doesn't register.

Fibre beats cable for gaming because the connection is dedicated (not shared with your neighbours) and the medium itself adds zero latency — light travels through glass at nearly the speed of light. Cable uses shared coaxial infrastructure where neighbourhood congestion during peak hours raises latency and introduces bufferbloat.
Best ISPs for gaming, by province
Ontario and Quebec: Bell Fibe gives the lowest latency of any consumer connection — direct fibre to your home, not shared with neighbours. TekSavvy on Rogers cable is a strong value alternative with acceptable gaming performance (typical ping 15–25ms to Toronto game servers).
BC and Alberta: Telus PureFibre is the gold standard in western Canada. Latency to Vancouver servers is typically 8–15ms on Telus fibre. Koodo, which uses the same PureFibre infrastructure, offers a slightly lower price point — check their bundle pricing with mobile.

The thing that hurts your gaming more than your ISP: bufferbloat
Bufferbloat is the most common cause of gaming lag that isn't your ISP's fault. It happens when your router's buffer fills up during heavy downloads, adding 200–500ms of latency to every connection — including your game server. You feel it when someone starts a Netflix download and your game suddenly starts rubber-banding.
